Software Architect

Designed and developed a web-based reporting system from data extracted from a SQL Server database. Initially the system was implemented using VisualBasic Script in an Active Server Pages environment. It was subsequently upgraded to an ASP.Net application.

2001 - Present Redwood City Public Works Services, Redwood City, CA

Software Architect

Designed and developed a system to enable city residents to submit, update, and view information relating to their water usage through the Internet. The system consists of a relational database accessible through a web interface, and supports multi-user read/write access. A separate access-controlled administrative web interface provides city staff with the ability to monitor system usage and produce reports. The server-based processing uses VisualBasic Script in an Active Server Pages environment, and accesses the database through the ActiveX Data Objects framework.

2001 - Present:  Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, Mountain View, CA

Software Architect

Designed and developed a public website, www.nrdb.org, with interactive access to a relational database of natural resources. The server-based processing uses VisualBasic Script in an Active Server Pages environment, and accesses the database through the ActiveX Data Objects framework. All work required for this project was donated to MROSD by KorTech Consulting, Inc.

Software Architect

Responsible for presentation and development of large-scale integrated system architecture of business and engineering systems across the entire company, using SAP R/3 as the primary integrating application.
  • Managed configuration-controlled architecture of several hundred applications and interfaces
  • Developed CASE tool to provide both interactive access to architecture configuration information, as well as a facility for automatically generating application context diagrams and presenting them through the web GUI. The tool is based on the following products and technologies:

Senior Research Scientist

Responsible for researching, identifying, and incorporating new technologies into existing and new product lines.
  • Conceived of and led project to design and develop Web gateway to FORMTEK’s enterprise document management product.
  • Architected new product line of distributed 3-tier client/server document management products.
  • Led cross-functional corporate-wide team in developing corporate vision and product strategy.

1991 - 1994:  XSoft, Palo Alto, CA

New Initiatives Consultant

Responsible for creation, validation, and initiation of new document services product.
  • Invented concept for major new Internet-based document services product based on Web technology, and drove product architecture team in technology and business analysis. Identified and negotiated agreements with technology partners and beta test customers, analyzed their requirements, and managed their on-going relationships. Resulting product, InterDoc, was launched successfully in June, 1995.
  • Coordinated effort to enhance HTML to accommodate uploading files from Web browsers to web servers, leading to incorporation of capability in version 3 of HTML.

Business Development Manager

Responsible for development of new business opportunities in areas of OEM arrangements and strategic and tactical partnerships.
  • Negotiated and completed partnership arrangements with IBM and Dell for bundling, marketing, and selling key PC-based XSoft products, resulting in first-quarter revenues in excess of $200,000.

Development Manager and Principal Software Scientist

Responsible for end-to-end development of major new document management product.
  • Led 10-person cross-functional team in conceptualization, competitive product research, architectural definition, and market, technology, and business case analysis of new document management product, culminating in approval by senior staff to commit $2 million to product development.
  • Managed program team of 20 engineers and support personnel through design and initial implementation phases of MSWindows-based product, leading to successful launch of XSoft’s Visual Recall document management offering and creation of a major new line of business at XSoft.
  • Conceived of Document Enabled Networking (DEN), a client/server-oriented document management architecture, and initiated strategic relationship between Xerox and Novell to jointly develop and promote DEN as an industry standard.

1981 - 1991:  System Software Dept. (the office systems software unit of Xerox), El Segundo, CA

Software Development Manager

Responsible for design, development, and engineering launch of multiple software products.
  • Managed 40 developers and 3 managers at 2 sites in the porting and enhancement of the XSoft GlobalView multilingual compound document editor to the Sun/Unix platform, delivering 500,000 lines of Mesa and C code within quality and schedule requirements. Worldwide sales of this product have resulted in revenues exceeding $50 million.
  • Managed 10 developers in the architecture, design, development, and deployment of Xerox networking software products based on XNS protocols, implemented on DEC PDP-11 and VAX hardware platforms, written in C. Products yielded $10 million in revenues over their lifetime.
  • Created product concept for integrated access to networked Oracle database from GlobalView environment, and led development group in its architecture, design, and implementation on VAX/VMS (C) and Xerox 6085 (Mesa).
  • Led 5-person team in design, implementation, and deployment of Executive Information System used by Xerox corporate office integrating a VAX database with the GlobalView environment.

1978 - 1981:  Electronics Division (the electrical engineering division of Xerox), El Segundo, CA

Principal Member Programming Staff

Responsible for design and development of business and engineering applications for internal use.
  • Designed and developed a multi-site distributed database for managing CAD documents within a distributed operating system based on RSX-11M on DEC PDP-11 equipment, written in C. The system was successfully implemented and used by Xerox electrical engineers across the US.

Responsible for enhancement of software development environment.
  • Implemented productivity tools for 100-person development staff using IBM/MVS with TSO on System 360/370 mainframes. Wrote programming bulletins and trained development staff.
